Pilot Makeathons: Circular Ideas Across Borders

Young people with multicultural backgrounds and fewer opportunities explored how circular economy, creativity and entrepreneurship can lead to practical solutions for a more sustainable future.

In February and March 2026, C-SUSTAIN implemented two Online Pilot Makeathons and 4 in person Pilot Makethons as transnational test events before the national in-person activities. More than 30 participants joined each session, together with trainers and project partners from different countries.

The Makeathons introduced young people, with a migrant background, to circular economy concepts, creative thinking methods such as SCAMPER, and solution-based group work. In breakout rooms, participants explored real-life challenges, developed ideas and presented their solutions in short pitches. Topics included packaging reduction, textile reuse, food systems and local circular economy opportunities.

The online format created an accessible space for international exchange. It allowed young people from different backgrounds and countries to collaborate, share perspectives and connect sustainability topics with their own realities. This was especially important for reaching participants with multicultural backgrounds and fewer opportunities.

The pilot activities showed that Makeathons are an effective way to turn learning into action. Participants did not only discuss sustainability - they tested ideas, worked in teams, received feedback and experienced how circular thinking can become a starting point for entrepreneurship and employability.

The results also confirmed that online Makeathons work best with clear tasks, strong facilitation and a good link to follow-up learning. They are especially valuable as preparation, awareness-raising or as a bridge to deeper national activities.

Overall, the Pilot Makeathons marked an important step in testing the C-SUSTAIN approach:
inclusive, practical, creative and focused on empowering young people to become active contributors to a more sustainable future.
