International Day of Democracy: September 15

Today, on the International Day of Democracy (15 September), the C-Sustain project celebrates the crucial role of young people in building inclusive, sustainable and democratic societies. Democracy is not just a system of institutions – it lives through participation, shared responsibility and the courage to shape change.
Together with five partner organisations across Europe, C-Sustain empowers young adults with entrepreneurial mindsets, digital skills and knowledge of the circular economy – always with a strong focus on sustainability, AI and social innovation. But why does this matter so much, and why should you get involved?
If you are between 18 and 30, passionate about sustainability and eager to turn your ideas into real impact, you are exactly who C-Sustain is designed for.
Here’s why your leadership is essential:
1. Democracy needs participation
The UN’s International Day of Democracy highlights worldwide how important it is to live democratic values and to create real opportunities for people to participate. Democracy thrives when young people raise their voices, contribute ideas and challenge the status quo.
2. Erasmus+ puts “participation in democratic life” first
Within the Erasmus+ framework, “participation in democratic life” is a key priority. Projects like C-Sustain create spaces where young people can experience co-decision, develop civic skills and make a tangible difference – from local communities to the European level.
3. Digital resilience against disinformation and AI manipulation
The International Day of Democracy also reminds us that false information, hate speech and AI-driven manipulation are putting democracies under pressure. C-Sustain strengthens media and digital literacy so that young people can act in informed, critical and constructive ways – online and offline.
How you can get active with C-Sustain
In our upcoming Makeathons and Innovation Labs, you’ll work with others to transform ideas into prototypes that tackle real-world problems. Through mentoring and collaborative learning, you’ll build skills in entrepreneurship, digital tools and circular economy – always linked to concrete social and environmental benefits.
A strong democracy begins with empowered young people who know their rights, understand today’s challenges and are equipped to design solutions.
Become part of our European network and shape the change you want to see.
Together, we don’t just imagine a better Europe – we build it.
